GREENSBORO – Freshman Emily Strombeck, who helped the North Carolina A&T bowling team reach the MEAC tournament for the first time since 2008-09, was named the MEAC Rookie of the Year. She also earned second-team All-MEAC honors, the conference announced on Friday.

Strombeck (Durham, N.C.) helped the Aggies to their first winning season since 2008-09 and a second-place finish in the MEAC Southern Division with a team-best 190.8 average and team-best 7,252 total pinfall.  She competed in 38 total head-to-head games and 52 bakers games this season for the Aggies.

“I am definitely proud of the hard work that Emily has put in this year. She has been a valuable player for us this season,” said A&T head coach James Williams. “The recognition is well deserved and brings attention to our rebuilding of this program. There is no coincidence that her recognition comes at a time when the program returns to championships.”

Strombeck, who was one of three newcomers to compete for the Aggies this season, had 12 games in which she bowled 200 or better this season.  She averaged a 196.3 to finish second overall in the MEAC #1 Southern Division Tournament in November.  She also averaged 204.4 at the Frederick Underwood Classic for sixth place and a 206.4 at the Capital Classic for 12th place.

She earned all-tournament honors at the Frederick Underwood Classic, helping the Aggies to finish in second place as a team, behind No. 4 Sam Houston State.  It was the best finish by the Aggies in a non-conference tournament this season.  Her best game this season was a 237 against No. 9 Adelphia at the Capital Classic on Feb. 9.

Strombeck, who also played women’s basketball at Kestrel Heights High, has played at a high level even before coming to A&T this year.  She qualified for the 2012 North Pointe Junior Gold Championships, a national tournament for the top youth bowlers in the country, and took first place in the 2012 N.C. USBCA Pepsi Youth Championship Finals. She also finished ninth in the 2012 N.C. USBCA Youth Championship Tournament with a 1,786 score.  She finished fifth in the 2011 N.C. USBC Pepsi Youth Championship Finals.
