Freshmen Look Sharp In Kat Klash

HOUSTON (November 5, 2017) – The North Carolina A&T Aggies bowling team finished up the second tournament of the 2017-2018 season in 13th-place. The Aggies closed out the tournament with a 6-7 record at the three-day Sam Houston State Track Kat Klash. The Aggies had several matches that could have went the other way as evidenced by their 12,692 total pinfall compared to their opponents 12,609.

N.C. A&T finished the tournament out strong on Sunday with a 2-1 record with two wins over Maryville 1,104-1,033 and 1,402-1,226. The only defeat on day three came against  Alabama-Birmingham, 1,294-1,288. The Aggies, the 18th-ranked team in the National Tenpin Caoches Association poll, are 10-14 on the season.

“I am most pleased with today’s performance,” said N.C. A&T coach Kim Terrell-Kearney. “We showed a lot of heart in today’s matches fighting back to win.”

The Aggies opened the tournament with a 2-3 record on Friday after facing off against stiff competition. The first two games were losses to two teams ranked in the top-5 of the NTCA poll in McKendree and Sam Houston State. McKendree defeated the Aggies 946-874, while SHSU won 859-833. N.C. A&T did recover to defeat Grambling State, 983-654 before losing to Louisiana Tech, 934-850. They finished out Day 1 with a win over Texas Southern, 944-876.  

Saturday featured a traditional-format play with the Aggies finishing 2-3. It was a back-and-forth day with the first game starting off with a loss to Arkansas State 1,004-867. Freshman Candyce Bradley led the way by bowling a 197. Bradley and fellow freshman Cameron Strombeck then bowled their first career 200 games as Strombeck came in with a 238 and Bradley posted a 220 in a 1,002-861 win over No. 6 Stephen F. Austin. Freshman Ana Olaya and senior Brianna Boze added scores of 192 and 191 respectively.

Bradley went over 200 again with a 201, but the Aggies lost to UAB 853-833. N.C. A&T had another exciting win, this time over Jackson State, as sophomore Tyra Merritt posted a 211 and Strombeck finished with a 203 score in the 937-935 nailbiter.  The other Aggie defeat came against Delaware State, 944-895. Olaya team-high 208 in the game.

Freshmen Cameron Strombeck and Candyce Bradley led the team in individual play. Strombeck finished with a 979 total pinfall to finish 21st to lead the Aggies. On her heels was Bradley a 968 total pinall to place 24th.  The Aggies next contest comes Nov. 11-12 in the first MEAC meet of the season in Chesapeake, Va.
