HARAHAN, La. – The eighth-ranked North Carolina A&T bowling team started the season strong going 5-0 in bakers play at the All-State Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational Friday at Colonial Lanes. The Aggies defeated third-ranked Stephen F. Austin, the defending NCAA national champions.
The Aggies rank third after totaling 4,800 pins for an average of 192.0. Fifth-ranked Sam Houston State leads the tournament with 4,901 total pins for an average of 196.0. The nation’s No. 1 team, Vanderbilt, is six pins ahead of the Aggies with 4,806 total pins (192.2). Seventeenth-ranked Louisiana Tech went 3-2 and is six pins behind N.C. A&T with 4,794 total pins (191.8).
N.C. A&T started the day with a 922-731 victory over Texas Southern in the first baker match and followed up with another SWAC win, a 973-874 triumph over Jackson State. In their third bakers match, the Aggies defeated Tusculum 998-774 before defeating SFA 973-938. SFA rounded out the top-5 with a 1-4 record that included 4,776 total pins (188.6).
N.C. A&T finished the day perfect with a 934-891 win over Valparaiso.
The Aggies continue the tournament Saturday with five traditional matches against No. 13 Lincoln Memorial followed by Southern, MEAC foe Alabama-Birmingham, No. 14 and tournament host Tulane and Alabama State.
