CULLOWHEE – North Carolina A&T cross country teams showed off some of their improvements in their respective season opening meets Friday night at the Western Carolina Invitational.

The men, who placed eight in last season’s WCU invite, placed fourth on Friday. Meanwhile, the Aggie women had a runner finish in the top-10 individually, a feat they did not accomplish in their last trip to Cullowhee.

Sophomore Darren White had the best outing for the men, finishing his 5k race in 16:17.78 for a 13th place finish. Freshman Miranda Green paced the women in the 2-mile run with a time of 11:59.91 for a 10th place finish.

“Very pleased with some of the individual performances,” said Duane Ross, director of track and field programs. “Specifically I was pleased with Darren and Miranda.”

Junior Perry Cabean ran second for the Aggies, placing 28th overall with a time of 16:51.34. Cabean finished the meet a little more than 11 seconds quicker than he did last season. Senior Saeed Jones placed 31st with a time of 17:06.31.

“Men’s team had a good overall performance, however, I know we can do better,” said Ross. “The competition for the top-3 on the men’s side was good for this time of the year and our guys competed well. It was a very solid performance for our men in our first competition this year.”

On the women’s side sophomore Daniqua Dye placed 33rd overall at 12:56.52. Freshman Imani Colman placed 44th with a time 13:31.07. “Our women need to come together a bit more, but that’s what these early meets are for, to see what improvements need to be made,” said Ross.

Both teams look forward to traveling to Durham, N.C., Saturday, Sept. 6 for the Eagle-Aggie Cross Country Classic.
