HPU Defeats A&T
GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T had a tough outing Wednesday night in a 25-3 loss to High Point University in non-conference baseball at War Memorial Stadium.
The Panthers put together 20 hits led by Spencer Angelis who went 5-for-6 with four runs scored. Dane McDermott, Kyle Brandenburg and Tony Fortier-Bensen had three RBI apiece. The one bright spot for the Aggies (15-26) came in the seventh when senior Luke Tendler hit a two-run homer to right-center field for his sixth home run of the season. It was the 23rd homer of Tendler’s career.
After two disappointing showings in midweek games this week, the Aggies will try to get back their winning form this weekend when Savannah State comes to Greensboro. A&T opens a three-game series against the Tigers in which both teams are after a tournament berth in next month’s MEAC Baseball Championship Tournament. Saturday’s doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.
Sunday’s first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. The team celebrates Senior Day on Sunday.
Only the top four teams from the MEAC southern division will make the tournament. A&T is in fourth place in the league at 8-10, while the Tigers are fifth at 6-11. The southern division is so tight, A&T can finish anywhere from first to fifth place.
Conor Lourey (6-0) picked up the win on Wednesday, while Joshua Thompson (0-1) took the loss.
