GREENSBORO (May 7, 2018) – North Carolina A&T men’s golf coach Richard Watkins is eager to improve the program after the inaugural 2017-18 season. On Monday, Watkins announced his second recruiting class as the head of the program following a season where the Aggies had the expected highs and lows of a first-year program.

Xavier Williams (Boling Springs Lakes, N.C., South Brunswick HS) and Diego Gonzalez Barrios (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) will join the Aggie family and will start their golf careers in 2018-19. There may be more signees to come according to Watkins.

“We understand there are two ways that we can get better. One of those ways is to improve the athletes have and the other way is to recruit better athletes,” said Watkins. “We intend to do both and signing Xavier and Diego will help us improve immediately. We are also hoping to sign a couple more athletes for both men’s and women’s teams.”

Williams helped the South Brunswick Cougars win two Mideastern conference tournaments where he finished second at the Mansonboro Country Club and fifth at the St. James Founders Club. Williams also played boys basketball where he earned player of the week in golf and basketball as a senior.

Barrios was a member of Bishops Gate Golf Academy La Loma, an organization built to inspire excellence of golf skills from student-athletes. In 2018, he participated in a playoff for a first-place finish at the LVIII National Championship. It was a six-way tie in which Barrios had to compete with some of his former teammates from BGGA La Loma. Barrios finished fourth in the playoff.

At the IMG Junior World Qualifier March 9-11 for ages 15-18, Barrios finished in the top-10 at El Club de Golf Tres Marias in the state Michoacan.

Williams and Barrios should be a big help for the men’s program. N.C. A&T’s top golfer for 2017-18, Luis Acevedo only had one year of eligibility remaining when he arrived at N.C. A&T, therefore, he will quickly need to be replaced.
