NEWMAN, Ga. (September 29, 2018) – The North Carolina A&T men’s golf team completed its first tournament of the 2018-19 season with a fifth-place finish at the Black College Hall of Fame Golf Invitational at the par-72, 6,954-yard Summer Grove Golf Club Course.

If the first tournament is any indication, the fifth-place finish may not have been what the Aggies seeking, but the improvement shown was desired. The Aggies slipped from fourth place to fifth by shooting a 22-over 310 on Saturday. But the Aggies were only 10-over after the first day which shows the talent is there to put together enough low rounds to win tournaments.

For the tournament, the Aggies were 32-over. Prairie View A&M shot even par on Saturday and were 3-over for the tournament to capture the title. Florida A&M (286), Alabama State (294) and Savannah State (303) finished ahead of the Aggies in the top-5.

Freshman Xavier Williams was the top Aggie in the tournament. Williams got his first career top-10 finish in his first collegiate tournament. He followed up his first-round even par with a 4-over 76 on Saturday to finish tied for 10th. Fellow freshman Diego Gonzalez had a second-round 3-over 75 to improve upon his plus-4 showing on the first day of the Black College Hall of Fame event. Gonzalez finished tied for 18th and was low man on the day for the Aggies.

Williams’ day included a birdie on the par-5, 549-yard No. 2. Williams parred the hole on Friday. Williams birdied another par-5 on Saturday when he carded a four on 510-yard, 14th. He parred 11 holes on Saturday with his roughest hole being the 441-yard, par-4 ninth where he double-bogeyed. He was 3-over on the hole for the tournament.

Gonzalez had a team-high three birdies on Saturday and tied Williams and sophomore Cody Lisner for the team lead in birdies for the tournament with five. After carding a double bogey on the par-5, 508-yard No. 11 on the back nine, Gonzalez recovered nicely to par the par-4 12 and the par-3 13 before birdieing the par-5 14 and par-4 15 to get to even par on the back nine. Gonzalez birdied No. 11 on Friday. He finished the back nine at 1-over after bogeying the 187-yard, par-3 16th.

N.C. A&T was up against some tough competition. Four golfers finished under par for the tournament led by tournament winner Lorenzo Elbert of Prairie View A&M who shot 8-under 136 to cruise to a five-stroke victory over Florida A&M’s Mulbe Dillard.

The other two scores the Aggies accepted on the team scorecard on Saturday was sophomore Casey Lindo’s 79 and Lisner’s 80. Sophomore Stefan Holczer had a terrific first day by shooting 3-over but had a tough second day with an 83. N.C. A&T will return to action at the Maryland Eastern Shore Collegiate Challenge, Oct. 16-17.
