DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The North Carolina A&T men’s golf team played their final round of the Gary Freeman Invitational on Friday at the par-72, 6,984-yard LPGA International Golf Course by shooting an impressive 309.
The Aggies finished 11th overall by shooting 951 in three rounds over two days. Augusta won the tournament with a two-day score of 878 finishing 12 strokes ahead of second-place Bethune-Cookman. Robert Morris (917), Sacred Heart (919) and Purdue Fort Wayne (923) rounded out the top-5.
N.C. A&T’s third round was its best of the tournament. Four Aggies shot in the 70’s on Friday led by sophomore Cody Lissner who shot a final-round 4-over par, 76. It was a vast improvement from his Thursday performance when he shot an 86 in round 1 and an 89 in round 2. Freshman Xavier Williams shot a 5-over 77 on Friday.
It was the Aggies second event since the spring semester started.
Freshman Diego Gonzalez has played since the start of 2019. Gonzalez matched Williams’ score on Friday with a 77 of his own. Gonzalez was the lowest scorer for the Aggies throughout the tournament. He followed up his seventh-place finish at the Lonnie Barton Invitational earlier in the week with a tie for 23rd as he shot a 15-over, 231.
Gonzalez’s best round came on Thursday when he fired off a 3-over, 75 but two scores in the 80’s were counted to slow the Aggies down in the first round. Williams was tied for 35th at tournament’s end. Sophomore Casey Lindo was the other Aggie who scored in the 70’s on Friday as he posted a 79.
N.C. A&T is back in action March 17-18 at the Cape Fear National in Wilmington, N.C.
