Golf Completes Converse Invite In Ninth
GREENSBORO (February 21, 2017) – North Carolina A&T concluded their final day at the Converse Spring Invitational on Tuesday with a ninth-place finish at the par-72, 5,881-yard Carolina Country Club golf course. The women’s golf tournament was the Aggies first since late October. The Aggies slipped from their first day of the tournament where they were seventh after shooting a 34-over par 322. On Tuesday, the Aggies were 46-over par to shoot a 346 as they ended the tournament 82-over.
Junior Sofia Alvarez led the Aggies by finishing 12th individually. Alvarez was in eighth place after the first day, but shot an 8-over par, 80 to slip to 12th as she finished 11 shots off the lead. Converse College’s Marley Felthousen won the individual title by shooting 5-over. Junior Jill “JC” Harvison also dipped into the 80’s on Tuesday. She shot a 13-over 85 to finish tied for 27th. Harvison’s 85 is her highest score of the season.
“After the first day I was pretty pleased,” said N.C. A&T coach Richard Watkins. “On the second day I can say it was the second 18 rounds of golf we have had this year where I didn’t have one player satisfied with their results.”
Watkins says effort is never an issue for his team. It is often inspiring to Watkins how hard his ladies want to work. Freshman Jocelyn Andrews is one of those players working hard and making improvements. She shot an 86 on Tuesday to finish 24-over. Her 82 on Monday was an improvement from her last semester play.
“Sofia and JC are going to do what we expect them to do,” said Watkins. “Andrews is one of those players who is starting to step up a little bit because she has been really working hard on some things.”
The Aggies will head to Daytona Beach, Fla., to participate in The Winthop/Bethune-Cookman Lady EagleCat Invitational, March 9-10.
