EAST GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T softball dropped their home finale 9-1 in six innings against Elon Wednesday at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex.
Sophomore Samantha Ramirez went 2-for-2 with a run scored, while senior Mohagony Headen recorded a hit and an RBI. In the circle, sophomore Hailee Cutts (3-5) picked up the loss giving up four runs in four innings. Elon (27-17-1) scored a run in the top of the first inning after Rebecca Murray’s RBI sacrifice fly to lead 1-0.
But the Aggies (8-26) bounced back with a run in the bottom half of the inning after Headen hit a base hit to center fielder to score Ramirez who reached after a double to left center field.
Elon scored two runs in the third inning to retake the lead 3-1 after an RBI single by Megan White and an RBI single by Elise Walton.
The Phoenix added another run in the fourth inning to increase their lead to 4-1 after an RBI single by Murray and scored four runs in the fifth inning for an 8-1 lead after Callie Horn scored on a wild pitch and a three-run triple to left center field by pinch hitter Lauryn Clarke.
The Aggies tried to score in the bottom half of the inning but could not push across a run. After two outs, freshman Nikki Varela singled to right field followed by senior Taylor Martin’s walk and Ramirez’s single to third base to load the bases. But a strikeout ended the inning.
Elon scored the final run of the game in the sixth inning after an error allowed Allie Eith to score from first base.
Murray, White and Walton each recorded two hits for Elon while Clarke added three RBI and Murray added two. In the circle, Hailey Jomp gave up a run in the first two innings and Kenna Quinn (8-4) picked up the win in relief after pitching the next 1.2 scoreless innings.
The Aggies finish up the regular season against N.C. Central Saturday and Sunday in Cary, N.C.
