Greensboro, N.C. (January 13, 2018) – The North Carolina A&T men’s tennis team is set to start their 2018 season against Elon on Saturday. They are looking to not only advance to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament in April but to improve their standing heading into it.
“This year is about unfinished business,” said N.C. A&T coach William Crutchfield. “The seniors on the team represents the first class since the men’s tennis team was brought back four years ago.”
The seniors formed a bond with the tennis alumni during homecoming week when the team hosted the Alumni Challenge event. They want to dedicate this season to the alumni and start a new legacy in Aggies tennis. It has given the team an added drive to strive for excellence this season.
N.C. A&T’s first home matchup will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 27 where they will host Wofford. The Aggies consist of six returning players comprised of three seniors in Brett Caban, Dreshaun Jarmon, and John Wilson IV, junior Nicolas Arduh, and sophomores Adair Bartra and Jordan Lawrence and two new players. They brought in a redshirt sophomore transfer in Hayden Faulkenbury and freshman Jorge Goenaga.
“Last year we spent a lot of time coaching the persons and working on the mental aspect of the players,” said Crutchfield. “This year we are coaching the athletes and fine-tuning their skills.”
The Aggies will face some vigorous competition this season leading to conference play. After their season opener, they take on the University of North Carolina on Jan. 18 before heading north for a doubleheader against Virginia Tech and Liberty on Jan. 19. Following the first home match, they hit the road again to take on Appalachian State, Winthrop and College of Charleston. Conference play begins for the Aggies on Wednesday, Feb. 28 against S.C. State who recently reinstated their program.
