Blacksburg, Va. (January 19, 2018) – The North Carolina A&T men’s tennis team went 0-2 in their doubleheader at Virginia Tech Indoor Center against Virginia Tech and Liberty. The Aggies lost to Liberty 6-1 with feshman Jorge Goenaga recording his first win as an Aggie with a victory in the Liberty match. It is the first time the Aggies have scored this season as a team as they dropped to 0-3 on the season.

The Aggies lost to Virginia Tech 7-0 in the second match.

“The guys played a good match against two good teams in their first doubleheader in four or more years,” said head coach William Crutchfield.

During the second matchup of the doubleheader, Goenaga captured the win over Liberty’s George Catledge 6-1, 4-6 (10-8) playing in the No. 5 spot. It was the last singles match played after Liberty already clinched the win.

Before the Goenaga, the Aggies were warming up and started to find their rhythm but it was not enough to overtake the Flames. At No. 6 singles, the fourth contest of the match, Jordan Lawrence was close to win the first set over Max Borcuti but lost 7-5. He lost the second set 6-2. At No. 4 singles, the fifth singles contest against the Flames, Hayden Faulkenbry lost two competitive sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Arduh took on Sam Matheson at No. 1 falling 6-2, 6-3. Senior John Wilson IV was defeated by Chase Burton 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 3 spot. The Aggies were swept in doubles to make the final score 6-1 in the Flames favor.

Sophomore  Adair (Jorge) Bartra battled it out in the No. 2 spot before going down to Alex Ribeiro 6-2, 6-1. Goenago showed some resistance in his first match in the No. 5 spot before giving way to George Cartledge 6-3, 6-2.
