GREENSBORO (February 23, 2018) – The North Carolina A&T men’s tennis team returns to action 1 p.m., Saturday to take on the Winthrop Eagles at 1:00 p.m. at the Rockhill Tennis Center. The match was originally scheduled for Feb. 11 but had to be rescheduled due to rain.
Both teams enter the match winless as the Aggies carry in an 0-7 record while the Eagles are 0-4. Winthrop’s losses came at the hands of N.C. State (7-0), Navy (5-2), East Carolina (5-2) and UNC Greensboro 5-2.
The Eagles top players thus far this season have been Diego Quiroz and Ruy Teixeira teaming up in doubles to get two wins at No. 1 doubles. Quiroz got his first singles win of the season against UNCG. Teixeira also has one win at the No. 2 spot. Tremayne Mitchell has two singles wins in the No. 4 position and a doubles win teamed up with Gabriel Diaz.
North Carolina A&T has not made it into the win column yet, but they have put on some exciting individual matches this season. Sophomore Adair Bartra has played five of seven his seven matches at the No. 2 singles position. He is coming off a three-setter against College of Charleston’s Ryan Khan on Feb. 18. He lost the third in a thrilling 12-10 finish. Junior Nicolas Arduh has been the Aggies mainstay at No. 1 singles. He has played six of his seven matches there and has only been held scoreless (6-0, 6-0) once. Arduh and Bartra do have two doubles wins together in 2018.
Talented sophomore Hayden Faulkenbury is trending up as well. All five of his singles matches have been at No. 4 including a three-set loss to College of Charleston’s Alec Angradi 2-6, 7-6, 5-7.
The Aggies contest will serve as a warmup to N.C. A&T’s first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match of the season, a Feb. 28 contest against MEAC power S.C. State in Orangeburg, S.C., at noon.
