GREENSBORO (March 11, 2018) – The North Carolina A&T men’s tennis team completed their spring break travel walking away with three singles wins. Over the week of spring break, the Aggies started Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Aggies went 0-4 including two losses in conference play.
The Aggies had losses to Georgia Gwinnett (9-0) Cardinal Stitch (8-0), Florida A&M (6-1) and Bethune-Cookman (6-1).
“Nicolas Arduh is still out with a broken elbow and is working hard in rehab to get back sooner than expected,” said N.C. A&T coach William Crutchfield. “Meanwhile, seniors Dreshaun Jarmon and John Wilson IV are being asked to lead us to a conference championship with wins.”
Jarmon did just as his coach asked, picking up his first win of the season with a win over Florida A&M’s Samer Hansona in four sets 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 10-5 at No. 3 singles. It was Adair Bartra stepping into the No. 1 singles position to grab his first win of the 2018 season against NAIA Cardinal Stritch who is ranked ninth nationally in that association.
Bartra defeated Agustin Gascia 6-4 in the first set before finding himself in a second-set tiebreaker. With set tied at 6, Bartra stepped up and earned a 10-5 win in the tiebreaker.
Freshman Jorge Goenaga picked up his second win of the season in the matchup against Bethune-Cookman. In the No. 4 singles position, Goenaga walked away with 5-7, 6-3, 10-2 win over the Wildcats’ Juan Diego Ruiz after dropping a close first set.
The Aggies will continue conference play Thursday, March 15 at S.C. State.
