EAST GREENSBORO (February 7, 2019) –North Carolina A&T’s Vasil Ivanov (6-foot-3, FR, Kardzhali, Bulgaria) captured the team’s first singles win on the 2019 season and was rewarded for his effort by being named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) men’s tennis rookie of the week (Jan 28-Feb. 3).
“It’s an honor to be named rookie of the week and to represent A&T and my team,” said Ivanov.
Ivanov spoiled Radford’s hopes of getting a clean 7-0 sweep of the Aggies during their season opener against N.C. A&T. Ivanov notched a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10-7) win over Radford’s Po Lassalle in the No. 3 singles position.
“Vasil is a remarkable player and we are looking for him to have a very successful rookie season,” said coach William Crutchfield.
It was not an easy win as Ivanov had to play a third set and a tiebreaker set to win. Ivanov found himself down early against Lassalle as he dropped the first set 6-3. Ivanov scrambled back to take the second set 6-3. In the tiebreaker set, the two opponents found themselves tied at 6 leading to a super tiebreaker set. Ivanov took care of business as he defeated Lassalle 10-7.
Ivanov has the team's the first weekly honor of the season.
