ELON (January 18, 2019) – The North Carolina A&T men’s tennis team opened the 2019 season with losses to Appalachian State and Elon at Elon University Friday night. In two abbreviated matches where only singles matches are played, N.C. A&T lost 4-0 to each school.
The matches were shortened because matches started late due to inclement weather.
“Even though we did not get to play doubles today, in singles we laid down a strong foundation with a lot of points having to go the distance,” said N.C. A&T men's coach William Crutchfield. “We had very few unforced errors today and that was our goal coming into today.”
N.C. A&T lost to App State first. Senior Nicolas Arduh took his match three sets before losing 6-7 (1-7), 6-0, 2-6 at No. 1 singles. Freshman Nolan Martino playing at No. 6 singles also went three sets winning the first set 6-1 before dropping the second 3-6. Martino was up in the third. But his match was left unfinished because Mountaineers already had four wins before Martino's match was over.
The same happened to sophomore Jorge Goenaga at No. 4 singles. Goenaga won his first set 7-6 (7-5) with his second set unfinished due to the App State clinch. Freshman Vasil Ivanov was defeated by Afonso Viana 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) in an intense matchup at No. 3 singles. Junior Hayden Faulkenbury came up short against Alex Pavkovich 4-6, 3-6 at the No. 2 singles position.
Against Elon, Goenaga took Kyle Frankel the distance before succumbing to his rival 7-5, 7-5 at the No. 2 singles. In No. 1 singles, Ivanov lost 6-2, 6-0 while Arduh lost at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-0.
The Aggies do not return to action until 3 p.m., Friday, Feb. 1 at Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Ga.
