GREENSBORO (April 12, 2017) – During one of the best seasons in program history, the North Carolina A&T women’s tennis team got more good news on Wednesday when the conference named freshman Klara Smolikova (5-foot-6, Czech Republic, Jihlava) its rookie of the week for matches between April 3-9.
Smolikova defeated Bethune-Cookman’s Phatismo Ruele 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 5 singles position, while also picking up a doubles win against the Lady Wildcats. She also narrowly lost her singles match against Florida A&M, falling 6-7 (7-9), 5-7 to Sophia Osabouhlen. Smolikova’s loss to Osabouhlen was her first conference loss in singles competition as she closed out the conference season with a 4-1 mark.
It is the second weekly honor of the season for women's tennis after Sheyla Ramirez won the honor on Jan. 25.
Overall, Smolikova is putting together one of the best seasons in Aggie women’s tennis history. She has one more win – eight – than the record seven wins in a season set by Winnie Quick (2009) and Khalia Powell (2016). Fellow freshman Kanishka Chawla also has eight wins. Most of Smolikova’s wins have come out the No. 4 singles position where she is 5-3. As a team, the Aggies head into their final regular-season match at Queens College on April 12 with a 6-12 record. They finished a program-best 3-2 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The N.C. A&T women start play in the MEAC tournament on April 20 in Norfolk, Va.
