NORFOLK, Va. (April 21, 2017) – Sophomore Sheyla Ramirez ended her season with a win but the North Carolina A&T women’s tennis could not keep their season going as they were eliminated from the 2017 MEAC Women’s Championship Tournament on Friday with a 4-1 loss to 12-time MEAC champion South Carolina State.

The Aggies had one of their better seasons end. They won a program all-time best seven matches, finishing the season 7-14 overall and 3-2 in the MEAC.

Despite the obvious improvement, the Aggies lost twice to the Bulldogs this season. Even in losing twice to the perennial champion, the Aggies fought hard in both matches, losing 4-2 on Feb. 18. Ramirez, who earned all three of her wins this season at the No. 1 doubles position, took down Intissar Rassif 6-4, 6-0. Sophomore Angelica Martinez who won earlier this season against S.C. State’s Oleksandra Flippova at No. 2 singles, lost at No. 3 singles on Friday to Andjela Vasic 6-2, 6-1. Oleksandra and junior Khalia Powell were not able to finish their No. 2 singles matchup on Friday because the Bulldogs had already clinched the required four wins. Powell dropped the first set but was in a 4-4 contest in the second set.

Junior Naida Hilton-Adams lost at the No. 4 singles. Freshman Kanishka Chawla, who has had one of the best seasons in program history, lost at No. 6 singles. The Bulldogs won all three doubles matches to take the doubles point as they advanced to the championship final against Florida A&M on Saturday. Freshman Klara Smolikova, who was tied at one set apiece with Claudia Roca, did not finish her match.

N.C. A&T hopes to build on a season where they reached as high as a No. 3 seed. They have no seniors as leaders Hilton-Adams and Powell return for their senior seasons in 2018.
