Winston-Salem (March 31, 2018) – North Carolina A&T women’s tennis grabbed a singles win over 19th-ranked Wake Forest in their 6-1 loss to the Demon Deacons at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Facility on Saturday.

Senior Nadia Hilton-Adams walked away with a win for the Aggies over Anna Ulyashchenko who retired in the first set at No. 4 singles. After going down 4-1 in the first set, Ulyashchenko called for the trainer and after discussing matters with her trainer and coach, Ulyashchenko left the match with an injury.

Senior Khalia Powell played an intense match against Chandler Carter at No. 3 singles. After dropping the first set 6-1, Powell played better after keying in on Carter’s weaknesses. It wasn’t enough as Powell came up short 6-3 in the second.

At No. 5 singles, Kanishka Chawla gave her best effort before falling 6-1, 6-2 to Mary Caroline Meredith. Fabiana Ramirez was defeated by Emma Davis 6-0,6-0 at No. 1 singles, while Angelica Martinez was defeated by Eliza Omirou 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2.

The Aggies only traveled with five players as sophomore Renata Ruiz stayed behind because of an illness giving the Demon Deacons the No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles positions wins by default.

During doubles play, Martinez and Chawla teamed up to take on the sister tandem of Mary Caroline and Courtney Meredith at No. 2 doubles. Martinez and Chawla found themselves behind early in the match, but found their rhythm and was edging their way back into the match. Before the duo had a chance to tie the match at 4, WFU clinch the doubles point with a win at the No. 1 doubles position, which stopped the No. 2 doubles contest with the WFU leading 4-3.

N.C. A&T will travel to Buies Creek on Thursday, April 5 to take on the Campbell Fighting Camels at the Nisbett Tennis Center at 2 p.m.
