GREENSBORO (April 25, 2018) – The North Carolina A&T women’s tennis team is set to compete in the 2018 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship that will run from April 26-28. The Aggies will open with the Hampton Pirates 8:30 a.m., Thursday at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center in Norfolk, Va.

N.C. A&T head coach William Crutchfield hopes to have his team peaking as the tournament approaches.

“At this level of tennis, it is about making minor tweaks to improve a player’s success on the court,” said Crutchfield. “If we play to our potential and execute everything we have worked on all season, I like our chances.”

N.C. A&T, the No. 4 seed out of the MEAC Southern Division, will face Hampton, the top seed from the MEAC Northern Division. The Pirates finished the year 6-0 in conference play and 9-7 overall. The winner will play the winner of the Bethune-Cookman/Howard match up 9 a.m., Friday. N.C. A&T is 2-18 overall and 2-3 in the MEAC.

Yulia Kapitanova leads the Pirates in wins as she enters the tournament 11-4 overall and 5-0 in the conference. She is 3-0 as the Pirates No. 1 singles player. Haley Mullins is second in wins with an 8-7 mark. She is also 5-0 in the MEAC and has mostly played at No. 5 singles.

In singles play, senior Khalia Powell and juniors Angelica Martinez and Fabiana Ramirez have five wins apiece for the Aggies. Senior Nadia Hilton-Adams and sophomore Renata Ruiz both have contributed four wins while sophomore Kanishka Chawla has grabbed three wins. In doubles play, Powell and Ramirez have teamed-up to earn five wins while the Chawla and Martinez duo have also come away with five wins on the season.

Powell leads the Aggies in conference play with a 4-1 mark. Chawla, Ramirez and Renata Ruiz have 3-2 records in the conference. The Aggies best doubles team in conference play is Chawla and Martinez who are 3-1 as a pair.
