EAST GREENSBORO (February 7, 2019) - North Carolina A&T’s Kaya Ellis (5-foot-6, FR, San Diego, Calif.) grabbed the first singles win of her career last week and was rewarded for her effort by being named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) women’s tennis rookie of the week (Jan. 28-Feb.3).
“All the work to improve my game is finally showing in results, and I will keep working hard to achieve more things with the A&T tennis program,” said Ellis.
Ellis’ win was not only the first win of the season, but it was also against a tough Georgia Southern opponent who came into the match with a 4-2 record. Ellis took on Luisa Hrda at No. 6 singles. Blazing her trail in the first set, Ellis got off to a 6-0 start against Luisa
“Kaya had to step in because we were a player down and she did not have time to be green,” said N.C. A&T coach William Crutchfield.” She has a lot of athletic ability and her temperament is always cheerful and she was a welcome addition to the team.”
Ellis earned the first weekly honor of the season for women’s tennis.
