AGGIES OVERVIEW: N.C. A&T has four wins in their last five competitions after recently downing Gardner-Webb in Moore Gymnasium, 3-1 on Tuesday. The Aggies have a home record of 2-3 and will host Mid-Eastern Athletic foes Savannah State on Friday and South Carolina State on Sunday closing out a three-match homestead during Homecoming Week.

SAVANNAH STATE OVERVIEW: Savannah State (2,15, 0-2) has lost 14 in a row. The Tigers are averaging 8.1 kills, 1.2 aces, 8.9 digs and 1.3 blocks per set, hitting .080 as a team. Junior Jennifer Rosado averages 1.42 kills per set pacing the attack while both senior Alee Quint (3.80 assists per set) and freshman Salma Gonzalez (2.80) each split the setting duties. Defensively, freshman Leiri Melendez leads the way with 2.88 digs per set and redshirt freshman Tyran Cheanult averages 0.76 blocks per set.

AGGIES VS. TIGERS SERIES: N.C. A&T has won all 20 meetings against Savannah State dating back to 2002. Last season, the Aggies won in four in Moore Gymnasium led by Samara Brown’s 20 kills, 17 digs, three blocks and two service aces. Christa Wilson was the only other Aggie to net double figure kills finishing with 10 and chipped in nine digs defensively. The Aggies have 17 straight set sweeps in the all-time series with the Tigers. 

SOUTH CAROLINA STATE OVERVIEW: South Carolina State began the season with 11 straight losses. The losing streak finally ended with a five-set win against Norfolk State in the MEAC North-South Challenge for their only win of the season. The Bulldogs dropped their last five matches and are 0-6 on the road. The Bulldogs are averaging 8.3 kills, 1.2 aces, 11.2 digs and 1.3 blocks per set, hitting .059 as a team. Two players are averaging at least two kills per set, led by freshman Alexus Holt’s 2.96 and junior Brianna Dafney’s 2.10. Freshman Jenai King leads the crew in assists averaging 6.76 per set and sophomore Desiree Walker is tops in blocks at 0.54 per set. Senior Marcella Chestnut and King anchors the defense averaging 2.18 and 2.14 digs per set, respectively.

AGGIES vs. BULLDOGS SERIES: N.C. A&T leads the all-time series with South Carolina State 33-10 and will look to extend a current five-match win streak against the Bulldogs. The Aggies took the series last season sweeping in Orangeburg and winning in four sets in Moore Gymnasium. The Bulldogs last victory was a four-set win in Dukes Gymnasium in 2013. Under Clifton, A&T is 8-5 with four wins coming in sweeps and four in four-sets.

BREWER RECORDS TRIPLE DOUBLE VS. GARDNER-WEBB: Freshman setter Edie Brewer garnered the first triple double dating back to 1994 for the North Carolina A&T volleyball program with 25 assists, 13 kills and 11 digs on Tuesday, October 2, 2017. Brewer had a breakout match with season-highs in both hitting percentage (.455) and kills (13) while tying a season-best in blocks (3). The Aggies finished with 53 kills and 45 assists which were also season-highs.

 

AGGIES ABOVE .500 WIN PERCENTAGE: The Aggies are 9-9 after a four-set victory over Gardner-Webb ending their non-conference schedule. N.C. A&T have already matched their win total from last season as well as their highest win total under head coach Hal Clifton’s seven-year tenure. N.C. A&T is .500 or better in the month of October for the first time since they were 8-6 on Oct. 3, 2006.

 

MILESTONES TO WATCH: Edie Brewer is 107 assists shy of 500 this season. Samara Brown is five kills shy of 700 for her career. Milanna Morgan is 35 digs shy of 200. Alyssa Pitt is 36 kills shy of 500 for her career and 19 digs shy of 200.

 

PITT EARNS MEAC CO-ROOKIE OF THE WEEK: Freshman outside hitter Courteney Pitt was named co-rookie of the week by the MEAC. Pitt was key in the Aggies five-set win over rival North Carolina Central to open conference play. She racked up 13 kills, while also chipping in a pair of service aces, two total blocks and three digs. She is the first N.C. A&T volleyball player to receive rookie of the week honors since Liz Martino did the same on October 14, 2013.

NEWS & NOTES:

Edie Brewer has led the Aggies in assists in all 18 matches. Against Gardner-Webb, Brewer had her first double-figure kill (13) and fourth double-figure dig (11) match. She had her fourth double-double of the season and the only triple double of any conference player her last time out versus Gardner-Webb.

Samara Brown is one of three Aggies averaging more than two kills per set (2.02). Brown is second in total kills (133) and has back-to-back matches with double-figure kills (14 at N.C. Central, 13 vs. Gardner-Webb).

Megan Wiggins finished with a season-high 15 assists against Gardner-Webb and is second on the team in assists, averaging 1.90 per set. Wiggins has five double-digit assists matches and recorded her first double-double of her career at Alabama State (13 assists, 12 digs) on Aug. 26.

Milanna Morgan led the Aggies in digs for the ninth time this season with a season-best 18 versus Gardner-Webb. Morgan has posted double-figure digs in her last two matches and has eight this season.

Courteney Pitt is second on the team in kills per set (2.08). She tied season-highs in both blocks (2) and solo blocks (1) while setting a new season-best attack percentage (.273) against GWU.

Camille Uadiale is leading the defensive pressure with at least one block in 14 consecutive matches beginning on Sept 1 against Delaware State. She is second on the team in blocks (47) and leads in solo blocks (13).

Alyssa Pitt moved to No. 8 on the career leaders list in blocks assisted after recording three versus Gardner-Webb. She has 126 total assisted blocks in three years. Next on the list is Tuamafa Reilly with 144 totaled back in 2001-02.

Jasmine Lindor leads N.C. A&T in total blocks (62) and has four or more blocks in eight matches. She is second on the team in service aces (18) and tied a career-high with four aces at NCCU.

NC A&T has never lost a match this season when posting a higher hitting percentage, more kills, assists, service aces and digs than the opponent. The Aggies are 4-1 when splitting the first two sets. They are 2-7 this season when they lose the first set.
