A&T Volleyball Defeats SCSU to Win Third Straight

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (November 4, 2017) - North Carolina A&T extended their win streak to three with a 3-0 (25-12, 22, 15) sweep on the road at South Carolina State on Saturday in Dukes Gymnasium.

The Aggies recorded a season-high 15 blocks against the Bulldogs paced by senior Jasmine Lindor’s six. Senior Samara Brown came up with five blocks and both sophomore Camille Uadile and senior Alyssa Pitt each finished with four. The Aggie defense held the Bulldogs to .034 attack percentage and 19 errors.

Brown set a new season-high hitting percentage (.423) and finished with a match-high 14 kills. Freshman Courteney Pitt added eight kills, three blocks and a pair of service aces and Alyssa Pitt followed with six kills. Sophomore Christa Wilson had her sixth double-figure digs match of the season with a team-high 12.

The Aggies (14-11, 6-2 MEAC) took over the first set on a 10-0 run jumping out to a 13-2 advantage. Four points came from blocks as Brown, Lindor and Alyssa Pitt defended the net. Back-to-back kills by Courteney Pitt and a service ace by sophomore Carena Meadows stretched the Aggies lead to 20-5. Brown led the attack with four kills in the set as the Aggies hit .250 on 11 kills. SCSU went on a slight run of their own cutting the Aggie lead to 22-10, but Brown’s final kill of the set followed by a service ace by Wiggins carried N.C. A&T to victory.

The second set featured eight tied scores as both teams battled to the brink. N.C. A&T broke the second tie on a kill by Alyssa Pitt and then a pair of attack errors by the Bulldogs put the Aggies ahead 8-5. The score remained close until the Bulldogs went on a sudden 7-0 run and led 17-12. Courteney Pitt powered the Aggies comeback first with a pair of service aces and a kill by Alyssa Pitt tied the set at 17. A kill from Brown went along with a pair of errors by the Bulldogs had the Aggies ahead 20-18. Kills by Alyssa Pitt, Brown and a pair from Courteney Pitt anchored the Aggies to a 2-0 match lead.

The momentum continued into the third set with N.C. A&T off to a 9-2 lead. The Bulldogs never got within six the rest of the way. Brown recorded six of her 14 kills in the set as the Aggies posted their highest attack percentage of the match (.296). SCSU (1-24, 0-8 MEAC) struggled with only two kills and a minus-.185 hitting percentage. N.C. A&T completed the season sweep of SCSU by winning all six sets in the matchups.

“Another good win tonight,” said N.C. A&T coach Hal Clifton. “We stumbled a bit in the second set, but I am proud of how the team stayed focused and resilient. We have been talking a lot about being mentally strong in tight situations. The energy the past two nights from the team has been great.”

SCSU was led by Alexus holt’s 10 kills and Marcella Chestnut finished with 10 digs.

N.C. A&T concludes their regular season with a pair of home matches in Moore Gymnasium, hosting Bethune-Cookman on Friday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. and Florida A&M on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. N.C. A&T still has a shot at capturing at least a share of the MEAC Southern Division regular-season title with a strong finish at home.
