Aggies Seek Tournament Success This Weekend

AGGIES OVERVIEW: North Carolina A&T claimed the No. 3 seed in the MEAC Southern Division after suffering sweeps in their final two regular-season matches to Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M in Moore Gymnasium. The 2017 Aggies volleyball team posted the most regular season wins (14) since the 2006 season (17-14). A win over Howard guarantees the Aggies first season above .500 since the ‘06 season. N.C. A&T is led by senior Samara Brown with 2.40 kills per set while senior Jasmine Lindor ranks third in the conference in blocks with 0.96 blocks per set and sophomore Camille Uadile is eighth in the MEAC in blocks at 0.80 blocks per set. Freshman Edie Brewer is third in the league in service aces (0.46) and 10th in assists (5.95).
HOWARD OVERVIEW: Howard earned the No. 2 seed in the MEAC Northern Division for the championship after finishing the regular season with a five-set loss to Morgan State at home on Nov. 10. The Bison’s Khaila Donaldson was named the MEAC Player of the Year for the second year in a row while Tamia Dockery and Jessica Young were both named second-team All-MEAC. Donaldson leads the HU attack and league with 3.61 kills per set. Young seventh in the MEAC with 3.09 kills per set and Dockery is second in the conference in assists (9.79).
SERIES: N.C. A&T holds an 11-3 lead over Howard in the all-time series between the two. Howard has won the last two matches in the series after the Aggies took 11 straight from 1995-2006. Their last meeting was a five-set loss for the Aggies on Nov. 21, 2014 in the quarterfinals round of the MEAC tournament.
LAST TIME OUT: Florida A&M was N.C. A&T’s final regular-season opponent and the Rattlers breezed through with a three-set victory. The Aggies tallied their fifth-highest dig total of the season with 58 led by Christa Wilson’s 17. Wilson tied a season-high with 17 digs while Samara Brown had 12 and Megan Wiggins finished with 10. Brown led the Aggie attack with nine kills and a service ace and Jasmine Lindor added six kills and three blocks.
N.C. A&T IN THE MEAC CHAMPIONSHIP: The Aggies hold a 15-20 record over 18 appearances in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament Championship. In their last trip to the tournament, N.C. A&T was sent home with an opening round elimination by Maryland Eastern Shore in straight sets on Nov. 18, 2016. The last MEAC tournament win for the Aggies was against Bethune-Cookman on Nov. 17, 2006. The Aggies reached the tournament finals twice; 1998 and 2005.
