CHARLESTON, S.C. – Junior setter Edie Brewer and freshman setter Addy Warfield nearly recorded double-doubles but North Carolina A&T lost in three sets to Charleston Southern 25-14, 25-19, 29-27 Tuesday night in non-conference volleyball action at the Buc Dome.

Brewer led the team with nine kills, 15 assists and five digs, while Warfield recorded 11 assists and nine digs. Senior outside hitter Christa Wilson led the team with 10 digs, while junior outside hitter Courteney Pitt added four kills and five digs and sophomore right side hitter Fatimah Shabazz added five kills and three blocks.

“We did not have our libero in the lineup, but Christa did a good job stepping into that role,” head coach Hal Clifton said. “We were able to make some adjustments in the second and third set.”

Charleston Southern took a 12-4 lead. The Aggies got as close as a seven-point deficit before the Bucs closed out the set. 

The Aggies (0-7) forced an early timeout by the Buccaneers (2-5) after taking a 6-3 lead. After the timeout, Charleston Southern went on an 8-1 run to capture an 11-7 lead. The Aggies worked to get back to within one at 12-11 before CSU finished the set strong to take a 2-0 match lead. 

The third set was the most exciting of the night. N.C. A&T got off to a strong start trailing only 8-7. CSU scored the next four points to increase the led to five points, 12-7, but the Aggies battled back to tie the set at 16. 

After a CSU kill gave CSU a one-point lead, 17-16, the Aggies put together a 5-1 run to go ahead by three, 21-18. The Bucs responded by outscoring the Aggies 6-1 to take a 24-22 lead. With N.C A&T facing match point, the Aggies scored the next three points to earn match point for themselves at 25-24. 

CSU scored the next two points to reclaim the lead, 26-25. The kept the back-and-forth going by taking the lead at 27-26. CSU, however, was able to score three straight points to win the set and the match. 

The Bucs were led by Carsyn Starr with 14 kills. Emilee Karelse recorded 31 assists and added 11 digs. Skylar Blackmon finished with 13 digs.

The Aggies remain in South Carolina with a trip to Spartanburg for the Wofford Invitational this weekend. N.C. A&T faces two teams Friday with host Wofford at 10 a.m., and Gardner-Webb at 4 p.m. They close the tournament with a match against Alabama A&M 9 a.m., Saturday.
