SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Junior setter Edie Brewer recorded the fourth triple-double in school history in leading the North Carolina A&T volleyball team to its first win of the season, a 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-20, 25-17) victory over Gardner-Webb in their second match on Friday at the Wofford Invitational at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
Earlier in the day, Wofford defeated the Aggies 3-1 (25-13, 21-25, 25-17, 25-16). N.C. A&T is 1-8 after Friday’s action. Brewer led the team with 11 kills, 14 digs and a match-high 34 assists in the win over GWU. It was her second career triple-double, the first also coming against GWU on Oct. 3, 2017 at Moore Gymnasium.
Pitt recorded a career-high and a match-high 25 kills, which is tied for fifth-most in school history, against Gardner-Webb. Fatimah Shabazz secured a career-high with 16 kills against the Runnin’ Bulldogs.
“We competed well,” head coach Hal Clifton said. “We made a few lineup changes and we seemed to find a little more rhythm. It was good to put a tick mark in the ‘W’ column and get rewarded for our efforts.”
Brewer recorded 52 assists in both matches Friday to give her 1,393 career assists to move her into fifth-most in school history passing Michelle Spottiswood. She also recorded 30 digs and 18 kills on the day. Pitt led the team with 35 kills and 11 digs in both matches Friday, while sophomore libero Andrea Laboy-Rivera led the team with 34 digs and Shabazz recorded 29 kills on the day.
Against the Bulldogs, the Aggies took a 17-12 lead after three straight kills from Pitt, two errors from GWU and a Brewer kill and service ace. The Bulldogs were able to pull to within one at 19-18 before the Aggies ended the set on a 6-1 run aided by two GWU attack errors and a kill apiece from Makaylah Elliott, Shabazz and Brewer.
In the second set, the Aggies fell behind 12-17 before two Pitt kills helped N.C. A&T get to within two at 16-14. GWU responded by outscoring the Aggies 4-1 over the next few points to take a 20-15 lead. Two GWU attack errors, a kill from Brewer and an ace from Elliott put the Aggies down only one, 20-19, forcing a GWU timeout. Following the timeout, the Bulldogs closed out the set to tie the match at 1.
The Bulldogs had their sights on taking the match lead after jumping to an 11-5 advantage in the third. N.C. A&T powered back to outscore the Bulldogs 11-3 to take a 16-14 lead. Shabazz had three kills during the run. N.C. A&T maintained a two-point lead at 18-16 until Brewer and Mallory Porcher were able to score on a kill and an ace respectively. That was followed by two GWU attack errors and a bad set to put the Aggies ahead 22-17.
GWU scored the next two points, but the Aggies took a 2-1 match lead thanks to a Shabazz kill and two Pitt kills that helped the Aggies close out Set 3 on a 3-1 run.
Poised to win their first match of the season, the Aggies took a 16-11 lead in the fourth set. After a GWU timeout, the Bulldogs scored three of the next four points to cut the lead to three points. But two kills apiece from Brewer, Shabazz and Pitt put the Aggies in position to put the match away. One of Shabazz’s kills during the Aggies outburst ended the set and the match. h.
Laboy-Rivera recorded a match-high 25 digs and added five digs while freshman Abby Warfield finished with 15 assists and seven digs.
In the first match, Shabazz led the team with 13 kills which was her career-high before her performance against GWU. Shabazz also had a .478 hitting percentage while Brewer led the team with 18 assists and 16 digs for her second double-double of the season and the 19th of her career. Brewer also added seven kills and two blocks. Pitt also reached double-figure kills with 10 and added five digs while Warfield added 12 assists and four digs. Laboy-Rivera added nine digs and four assists.
Wofford led big in the first set, 16-9, as they went on to win Set 1 by 12 points. Set 2 started a lot closer as a Shabazz kills and a Macenzie Richards ace cut Wofford's lead to 11-9. Wofford increased their lead to 17-12 before the Aggies got to within two, 17-15, thanks to a Terrier service error, an ace from Aggies defensive specialist Milanna Morgan and a Terrier attack error. The Terriers expanded their lead to four, 23-19, but a service error by Wofford and a Pitt ace got the Aggies to within two at 23-121.
Wofford scored the final two points to win the set by four points and to take a 2-0 match lead.
The Aggies tried to stay in the match by taking a 9-5 lead in the third. After Wofford scored the next three points, N.C. A&T responded by going on a 5-0 run aided by a kill apiece from Brewer and Shaylynn Hall to give the Aggies a 14-8 lead.
A Pitt kill increased the Aggies lead to 20-13 later in the set. Wofford scored three of the next four points to cut the lead to five points, 21-16, but Tasmyn Fahey and Brewer recorded kills to help the Aggies finish the set with a victory.
Wofford put the match away, however, after taking a 17-11 lead in the fourth set. The Aggies got to within four by scoring the next two points, but the Terriers closed strong to end the match and the set.
The Terriers were led by Catie Cronister with 13 kills and Lorissa King with a double-double of 34 assists and 11 digs. The Aggies finish the tournament Saturday against Alabama A&M at 9 a.m. before hosting USC Upstate Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Moore Gymnasium for the home opener.
