YOUR NORTH CAROLINA A&T AGGIES: North Carolina A&T will host USC Upstate Tuesday night at Corbett Sports Center for their 2019 home opener.

N.C. A&T is riding a two-match winning streak after defeating Gardner-Webb (3-1) and Alabama A&M (3-0) at the Wofford Invitational over the weekend.  During the tournament, junior outside hitter Courteney Pitt led the team with an average of 4.82 kills while sophomore right side hitter Fatimah Shabazz averaged 3.82 kills.  Junior setter Edie Brewer led the team with 7.18 assists per set and recorded her second career triple-double and the fourth in school history with 11 kills, 34 assists and 14 digs while hitting .500. 

On the defense, sophomore Andrea Laboy-Rivera led the team with 4.18 digs per set while Brewer averaged 3.36 digs.  Sophomore middle hitter Shaylynn Hall recorded 13 blocks, five solo and eight block assists for an average of 1.30 blocks.

Pitt averages 3.55 kills and 1.91 digs per set. She is third in the conference kills while Brewer ranks seventh in the conference in assists per set at 5.64. The versatile Brewer also averages 2.45 kills and 2.55 digs per set.   

Laboy-Rivera and Hall are proving to be two of the best defensive players in the league. Laboy-Rivera is fourth in the MEAC in digs per set (3.90) and Hall is second in the MEAC in blocks per set (0.96).

USC UPSTATE SPARTANS: The Spartans went 1-2 last weekend with a 3-2 win over MEAC member Norfolk State for their only win of the season.  USC Upstate is led by Emily Russell with 2.73 kills per set and a .310 hitting percentage. Annalisa Mendoza leads the team in assists at 8.67 assists per set and Mackenzie Marcum is the leader on the back row with 3.50 digs per set.

MEAC Weekly Awards: Brewer was named setter of the week by the MEAC and Hall was named the co-defensive player of the week by the league.  In four matches last week, Brewer recorded 94 assists, 35 kills with a .272 hitting percentage, 42 digs, six blocks and two service aces, while Hall recorded 13 blocks with nine kills and a hitting percentage of .476. 

Career Watch: Brewer recorded 94 assists last week to move her into fifth place in school history passing Michelle Spottiswood who recorded 1,365 from 1995-96.  Brewer has recorded 1,420 career assists and 204 assists this season to move into fourth place.  Brewer also recorded two service aces last week to give her 75 career service aces, which moves her into a tie for eighth place with Aleena McDaniel (2012-15).

Pitt had a great week last week recording 57 kills to give her 708 career kills. She needs 43 kills to move into eighth place in school history. Danesha Taylor (1998-01) holds eighth place with 750 kills. 

Up Next: The Aggies will play in the UNCW Hampton Inn Invitational this weekend hosted by UNC Wilmington.  N.C. A&T faces Western Carolina Friday at 4:30 p.m., followed by two matches Saturday with Drake at 10 a.m. and UNC Wilmington at 5 p.m.
