Lessears' Career Night Falls Short at UT Martin

MARTIN, Tenn. (November 30, 2017) – North Carolina A&T women’s basketball suffered their third consecutive loss falling to UT Martin, 76-63 Thursday night in the Elam Center. Sophomore Alexus Lessears had a career performance, posting 20 points, 18 rebounds and five blocks, all career highs.  

Lessears went 9-for-12 from the field and finished with 10 offensive rebounds for her second double-double of the season and fifth of her career. Her fourth double-digit rebounding game of the season helped the Aggies outrebound the Skyhawks 44-34. It was Lessears third consecutive game with 10-plus rebounds. N.C. A&T finished with a season-high 10 blocked shots aided by sophomore Le’on Hill’s two.

The Aggies took an early 14-7 lead as Lessears posted five points sophomore C’Coriea Foy made one of two first half 3-pointers. The game then shifted in favor of the Skyhawks with a 10-3 run to end the quarter. The N.C. A&T shooting slump carried over into the second quarter with the Skyhawks outscoring the Aggies, 20-6. N.C. A&T was held to only three made field goals while UT Martin made 8 of 9 from the field and led by double figures at the 3:11 mark. It led to the Aggies trailing 40-23 at the half.

After a rough second quarter, the Aggie offense improved with both teams making seven field goals in the third period. The only difference between the N.C. A&T scoring and the UT Martin was that six Skyhawk field goals were from behind the arc compared to the Aggies going 1-for-6 from 3-point range. Senior Kala Green and Lessears combined for 11 of the 17 Aggie points in the third quarter as UT Martin built a 24-point lead, 64-40, heading into the fourth.

 The Aggies ended their third straight road game outscoring the Skyhawks 23-12 in the final period. Sophomore Chrishyanah Alston came off the bench and scored all nine of her career-high point total in the fourth quarter while Lessears posted her strongest quarter by scoring nine points. N.C. A&T held UT Martin to their lowest point total of any quarter, 12, and held them to 33 percent shooting (5-for-15) from the field.

Green finished with 11 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Foy had 10 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. The Aggies return to the Corbett Sports Center for three games in eight days. First is a matchup against Division II in-state foe St. Augustine’s on Monday, Dec. 11 at 5:30 p.m.
