A&T Has Impressive Two-Day Showing In Hawk Classic

MILLSBORO, Del. (November 19, 2017) – The 18th-ranked North Carolina A&T bowling team finished in 10th place during the Hawk Classic hosted by Maryland Eastern Shore University with a total pin fall of 12,661. They completed the tournament with an 8-5 record with wins over four top-15 programs in the National Tenpin Coaches Association. The Aggies also defeated all four Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Northern Division schools in traditional play on Saturday.

The Aggies started off the tournament on Friday with a 4-1 record in Bakers play with wins over nationally-ranked programs. They started the tournament with wins over No. 16 LIU-Brooklyn 893-823 and No. 21 St. Francis-Brooklyn. They suffered their only loss of the day to No.9 Sacred Heart before going on to finish out the day with wins over No. 14 St. Francis (Pa.) 926-885 and No. 5 Sam Houston State 944-927.

N.C. A&T had another strong showing on Saturday during team traditional play going 4-1. The only loss of the day came during the first match-up against St. Francis (Pa.) 1,018-936. The next four games were against MEAC northern division schools in which the Aggies went 4-0. They started off the winning streak by first defeating Howard 983-821 then moved on to beat (12) Delaware State 855-849, (7) Maryland Eastern Shore 946-932, and Coppin State 950-758.

“Great first two days, we just have to figure out how to get going out of the blocks on Sundays,” said N.C. A&T coach Kim Terrell-Kearney. “Otherwise, I am very proud of how we are improving.”

Senior Brianna Boze was back on top for the Aggies in individual play with a 972total pin fall (194.4 average). Her game-high was 212 as she finished 21st place. Freshmen Ana Olaya was the only other Aggie to finish in the top-25 with a 962-total pin fall (192.4 average). She posted a high game of 215, while freshman Cameron Strombeck rolled a season-high 239. Sophomore Tyra Merritt bowled a season-high 220.

The Aggies had an opportunity to finish out the tournament in fifth place, but were unable to come away with a win on the final day. They finished the final day 0-3 in bracket play in the best of seven Bakers format. The three losses were to LIU-Brooklyn 994-902, Tulane 1,399-1,236 and Monmouth 1,166-1,113.

N.C. A&T will next travel to Tallahassee, Fla. on December 2-3 to compete in the MEAC Southern Division Meet No. 2.
