EAST GREENSBORO (October 30, 2018) – Junior Tyra Merritt (Tampa, Fla.) was rewarded for her performance this past weekend at the Bearcat Hammer Open hosted by national runner-up McKendree in Fairview Heights, Ill. Merritt was named co-bowler of the week by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference on Tuesday.
Merritt led the Aggies to an 8-5 record against some of the top programs in the nation. Tuesday's honor marks the second straight week
“Tyra has put in a lot of work the past few seasons,” said coach Kim Terrell-Kearney. “I am delighted to see it starting to pay off.”
Merritt rolled three 200-plus games during traditional play including a career-high 249 against Prairie View A&M during the opening game on Saturday. She bowled 213 and 204 for her other 200-plus games. Those games led to a career-high five-game series of 1,042 for Merritt. Merritt finished 11th in the individual standings with a total pinfall of 1,042 and a 208.4 average. Merritt’s performance throughout the tournament helped the Aggies secure wins over three National Tenpin Coaches Association top-20 teams.
They defeated fifth-ranked Arkansas State 1,041-940 and 14th-ranked Lincoln Memorial 927-889 on Day 1. On Day 2, N.C. A&T defeated No. 18 Central Missouri 925-889 before downing them again on Sunday during bracket play in five games during the second round.
"It was a great weekend and it is encouraging to see all of my hard work falling into place this early into the season, but there is more work to be done," said Merritt.
Merritt and the Aggies will return to action Saturday, Nov. 10-11, to open up conference play in the first MEAC conference match this season in Wilmington, Del.
