AGGIES WIN TV GAME AT CORBETT

Box Score
GREENSBORO, November 2, 2006 After three straight second-team All-MEAC selections, senior Arlene Mitchell made her case for first-team all-conference and national recognition in front of the nation on Thursday night.

The Henderson, N.C., native recorded her 11th double of the season and the 35th of her career with a 22-kill, 13-dig performance to lead the Aggies to a 3-1 win (27-30, 30-13, 30-22, 30-21) at Corbett Sports Center during a nationally-televised game on ESPNU.

Junior setter Brenden Chatman also showed off her talent with eight kills, 49 assists and 13 digs, marking the second straight match she almost recorded a triple-double.

“This was great exposure for our program,’’ said head coach Millicent Sylvan. “Our players were able to show potential recruits that we play an outstanding style of volleyball at North Carolina A&T.”

Despite Arlene Mitchell’s performance, it was her twin sister who put away the Bulldogs. Darlene Mitchell slammed down seven of her eight kills in Game 4 to clinch the win. With Game 4 tied at 11, Darlene Mitchell tapped one kill over the outstretched arms of S.C. State's Hilary Overby to take the lead. Darlene Mitchell followed that up with a crushing kill to give the Aggies a two-point lead.

Darlene Mitchell’s kills sparked a 13-4 run and the Bulldogs never recovered. There were not too many things that went right for N.C. A&T in Game 1, however.

The Aggies had a .000 hitting percentage in Game 1 and committed 12 errors. Despite the slow start, the Aggies still led 24-18. But Linnie Garrett had three kills and the Aggies had two attack errors and a service error in an 8-2 Bulldogs run that tied the game at 26. The Bulldogs took their first lead of the game on an Avignon Williams attack error. Two more Aggie attack errors gave the Bulldogs the game.

In Game 2 and 3, it was Arlene Mitchell who helped the Aggies gain an advantage with seven kills in each game.

The Aggies go on the road Tuesday to play High Point University at 7 p.m. They play their final home match of the season on Nov. 9 against Campbell University at 6 p.m. It will be the final career home matches for seniors Lauren Walker and Darlene and Arlene Mitchell.
