Box Score vs. Morgan State After beating Bethune-Cookman in the first round of the 2006 MEAC Volleyball Tournament Friday afternoon 3-1 (30-28, 35-33, 31-33, 30-27), the Aggies lost in the semifinals Friday night to Morgan State 3-0 (30-23, 30-24, 30-19). The Aggies finished the season 17-14 overall, and seniors Arlene and Darlene Mitchell saw their fabulous careers come to an end along with fellow senior Lauren Walker.
Against Bethune-Cookman, the Mitchell twins combined for 38 kills as
the two teams battled beyond the 30-point plateau twice. Lauren Walker
added 31 digs for her sixth career 30-dig performance. North Carolina A&T had to fight off two Wildcat rallies to win the first two games. The Aggies could not survive the Wildcats rally in Game 3, however, as Danielle Goodrum helped Bethune-Cookman to the Game 3 win. The Mitchell twins and Avignon Williams finished off the ‘Cats in the fourth game to advance to the semifinals for eighth time in nine seasons. Arlene Mitchell’s 22 kills marked the 11th time she has recorded 20 kills or more this season. Williams added 10 kills for the Aggies, and junior setter Brenden Chatman had 54 assists. But the Bears were too strong. The Bears had an impressive .308 hitting percentage for the match and had four different players reach double-figure kills, including Ivanti Bush’s 16. The Bears held Arlene and Darlene Mitchell to .000 hitting percentage, the first time that has happened all season. Chatman had seven kills, seven digs and 25 assists. N.C. A&T went 7-3 in the conference this season. Mitchell ends her career with 1,674 kills, 1,023 digs and 277 services aces. For the fourth straight year she ranked in the top nationally in services aces. She also had 35 career double-double games. Her sister, Darlene, finished her career with 945 kills for a career average of 2.4 kills per game. She also had 222 career blocks. Walker, who has played three years at N.C. A&T after transferring, totaled an impressive 1,455 digs.
