9, 2006 -- The
Aggies volleyball program and the Department of Athletics with a bit a
mixed emotions will honor three superb seniors tonight as they play
their final home volleyball match at Corbett Sports Center, starting at
6 p.m., against Campbell. Twin sisters Arlene Mitchell and Darlene Mitchell and Lauren Walker have been together for three years after Walker transferred in from Alcorn State to play for newly hired Millicent Sylvan. Walker has led the Aggies in digs for three straight seasons. Arlene Mitchell has led the Aggies in kills per game for three straight years. She has also been ranked among the top servers in the nation all four years of her career. In their three years together, they have helped the Aggies win 48 matches and go 23-7 in MEAC play, including a 9-1 finish in 2005. The nine wins were the most conference wins in the history of the program. As the only two four-year seniors on the team, the Mitchell twins have won 63 overall matches and 30 in the conference. "We’ve had a great time at A&T,’’ said Arlene Mitchell. “It’s sad to see it come to an end, but we have so many great memories here, we have a lot to take with us.” Here are a few career highlights. #11 Arlene Mitchell, 5-9, Henderson, N.C. Is 21 digs shy of becoming the first Aggies player to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career…Coming into tonight’s game she has 1,611 kills, 979 digs, 266 services aces and has a career hitting percentage of .230 …She has recorded 20 or more kills 24 times and has 35 career double-doubles…She is one of the nation’s best services and has ranked in the top 10 nationally in services aces all four years of her career…She is a three-time second-team All-MEAC selection…She is the daughter of Nanie Hicks and William Gaye, and she majors in fitness and wellness. #12 Darlene Mitchell, 5-9, Henderson, N.C. Darlene Mitchell missed significant time during her freshman season….Otherwise she and her twin sister would probably both have 1,000 kills during their careers…Mitchell comes into tonight’s game with 899 kills, 510 digs, 218 blocks and has a career hitting percentage of .175…Last season, while her sister was out with an injury, Darlene stepped up and averaged 3.3 kills per game and led the Aggies to an 8-4 record…She has averaged 2.3 kills, and 1.4 digs during her career… She is the daughter of Nanie Hicks and William Gaye, and she majors in fitness and wellness. #3 Lauren Walker, 5-8, Fort Worth, Texas Has played three season with the Aggies after transferring in from Alcorn State…Over her first three years, she likely leads the team in floor burns She has led the Aggies in digs in each of those three years…Is capable of playing both the librero and setter positions…Has been the Aggies defensive standout the last three years, recording a career 1,350 digs…She has recorded 20 or more digs 13 times during her career and has a career average of 4.0 digs per game…As a junior, she earned second-team All-MEAC honors as a librero…She is the daughter of Robbie Walker Rivers and she majors in political science. |
