Forget everything else that has happened to the Aggies volleyball team this season because they’re 1-0 in the MEAC.

The Aggies won their first game of the season with a 3-2 win (30-23, 28-30, 30-19, 27-30, 15-13) over S.C. State Tuesday night. In the process, the Aggies (1-16, 1-0 MEAC) also gave head coach Lyndsay Schmiedel her first career win. It was also a significant win for many of the Aggie players because their former coach Millicent Sylvan, is the head coach at S.C. State.

On the court, Krystal Cooper led the Aggies with 16 kills and eight digs. Aundia Gray added 13 kills and Brenden Chatman chipped in with six kills, 36 assists and 13 digs.

In the fifth and deciding game, the Aggies took control of the match when Cooper slammed down a kill to give the Aggies a 9-4 lead. The Aggies kept their distance from the Bulldogs until a Jarne Gleaton kill brought the Bulldogs within two at 13-11.

The Aggies answered with a kill from Janae Mitchell to put the Aggies one point away from their first victory of the season. Linnie Garrett and Gleaton postponed the celebration with consecutive kills to pull the Bulldogs to within one.

But a Garrett service error ended the match.

“I certainly think the ladies were excited about playing here tonight because their former coach was on the other side,’’ said Schmiedel. “But I don’t think they got too carried away with that.”

Sylvan coached at N.C. A&T for three seasons and coached many of the current Aggies, including Cooper, Chatman, Gray, Mitchell, Avignon Williams, Nyra Taborn and Kaycee Anderson. Sylvan’s Bulldogs were led by Garrett who had 19 kills. Gleaton added 18 kills.

“In our league, there is only one team going to the NCAA Tournament and that’s the tournament champion,’’ said Schmiedel. “We’re focused on being that team, so we’ve played some tough competition early in the season to prepare ourselves.”
