GREENSBORO, November 3, 2007 – North Carolina A&T’s volleyball team played its most precise match offensively on Saturday to earn a key 3-0 (30-18, 30-16, 31-27) conference win over S.C. State at Corbett Sports Center. The Aggies improved to 4-2 overall and moved into second-place in South Division of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The win assured the Aggies a spot in the MEAC Volleyball Tournament (Nov. 16-17), which takes the top four teams from each division. Another conference win will mark the 12th straight season the Aggies have had a winning record in the conference. Avignon Williams led the offensive attack with 11 kills on a .600 hitting percentage. The junior out of New Orleans only made two attack errors as she also finished with two solo blocks. Nyra Taborn joined the fun with nine kills on a .571 hitting percentage, both career highs for Taborn. Brenden Chatman added eight kills, 31 assists and five digs. The Aggies may have been motivated by the return of their former coach Millicent Sylvan. Sylvan took over the Bulldogs program over the summer after coaching three years at N.C. A&T. “The ladies have been looking forward to the match against her,’’ said Lyndsay Schmiedel. “You can’t blame them for that. She was a part of their lives for three years. Anytime you find something that motivates you on the floor, you use it.” The Aggies had a season-high .362 hitting percentage as a team. In the first game, the Aggies had an impressive .652 hitting percentage. In the second game, they posted a .455 hitting percentage. In the third game, those numbers went down sharply. The Bulldogs came out in the third game more competitive. They took a 19-14 lead in Game 3. But Aundia Gray, whose 10 kills on Saturday marked the seventh straight match in which she has recorded double-figure kills, tied the game on a kill from a Chatman set. The Aggies took their first lead of the game at 23-22 on an attack error by S.C. State’s Jarne Gleaton. The Bulldogs regained the lead on a Kathlyn Stephenson kill and an Aggies attack error. But a Chatman kill would spark a 4-0 Aggies run that helped them take control of the game. Chatman’s kill was followed by a Williams, Kaycee Anderson and another Chatman kill to give the Aggies a 27-24 advantage. Cooper ended the match and the game on a kill. The Aggies are back in action Tuesday night when they take on non-conference opponent Campbell at 7 p.m. at Corbett Sports Center. |
