North Carolina A&T appear to be inching closer and closer to its first win. Over the weekend, the Aggies played their first five-game match in a loss to Air Force. On Tuesday, they were swept 3-0 by Campbell (30-24, 24, 25), but they were competitive in all three games and played better defensively.

All signs that the Aggies might be showing signs of breaking free from a slow start to the season. Aundia Gray led the Aggies on Tuesday with eight kills and three blocks. Tuesday marked the second straight match the Aggies held a team under a .200 hitting percentage as Krystal Cooper finished with 12 digs.

“We’ve really played a tough schedule,’’ said N.C. A&T head coach Lyndsay Schmiedel. “Hopefully as the season goes on playing this type of schedule will be a benefit for us.”

The Aggies jumped out quickly against the Camels. A Katie Stallings service error put the Aggies ahead 9-3 in the first game. The Camels fought back to tie the game at 11 before going on an 8-2 run sparked by five N.C. A&T attack errors. The Aggies would get back within three, 27-24, thanks to a series of attack errors by Campbell.

However, a Taylor Deering kill, a service ace by Caroline Hammersly and a kill by Caitlin Bendy set up by Hammersly iced the game for the Camels.

In the third game, it was the Camels who jumped out to an early lead as a run of three straight Bendy service aces gave the Camels a 12-3 advantage. The Aggies roared back and tied the game at 21 thanks to a Brenden Chatman kill. The Aggies then took a two-point lead thanks to a bad set by the Camels and a Nyra Taborn kill.

The two teams went back-and-forth and were tied at 24 until another Bendy kill gave the Camels the lead for good. The Aggies fell to 0-11 and will play again on Friday when they begin action in the Western Carolina Tournament against the Catamounts at 9:30 a.m.
