AGGIES BATTLE EACH OTHER IN FINAL TUNE-UP

GREENSBORO, August 21, 2007 The old was made new Tuesday night at Corbett Sports Center. Although the faces were familiar, there was something different about the North Carolina A&T volleyball team.

In the final tune-up before the start of the regular-season on Friday afternoon at High Point University, the Aggies held a Blue & Gold intrasquad scrimmage that featured veteran players in new roles. There was a new head coach even though the players have known her for two years. There were new attackers without freshman being involved and there was also a familiar face – Stacey Malone – playing her new position as the Aggies libero.

“We wanted to see what it all looked like in a game setting,’’ said first-year head coach Lyndsay Schmiedel, who spent her first two seasons at N.C. A&T as an assistant. “We still have work to do, but the ladies are becoming more and more familiar with what we’re asking of them.”

The Blue team consisted of senior Krystal Cooper, Kaycee Anderson, Nyra Taborn, Aundia Gray and Amber Inman. Brenden Chatman, Avignon Williams, Carrie Lynch, Allante’ Whitmore, Tiffany Mellette and Malone were the Gold team. The Gold defeated the Blue 3-0.

During the scrimmage, there were some veteran players playing the same role they have always played.  Chatman, a senior out of Davenport, Iowa, is 613 assists shy of becoming the Aggies all-time leader in assists. She looked in mid-season form with her typical all-around game on display Tuesday. She finished with 25 assists, 15 digs, seven kills and six service aces. Defensively, Malone looked strong as she ended the night with 17 digs.

Williams looked comfortable in her new role of being an offensive threat for the Aggies. The New Orleans native looked dominate at the net with eight kills and nine blocks. On the outside the Aggies will look to senior Krystal Cooper and sophomore Janae Mitchell to provide offensive fire power. The two Blue teammers combined for 18 kills and 21 digs.

Mellette led all attackers with 14 kills, an impressive .462 hitting percentage and she added nine digs.

The Aggies start their season Friday in the Triad Challenge at High Point University. The Aggies open with High Point at 2:30 p.m., and finish the day with a match against Kennesaw State at 5 p.m.

The Triad Challenge moves to UNC-Greensboro on Saturday as the Aggies face Radford at 11 a.m., and UNCG at 7 p.m.
