NORFOLK, Va., October 30, 2007
The North Carolina A&T volleyball team took another step toward assuring it would be participating in the MEAC Volleyball Tournament in November with a 3-1 win (30-23, 25-30, 30-23, 30-25) over Norfolk State at Echols Hall Tuesday night.

Junior Aundia Gray had another outstanding night for the Aggies, finishing with 15 kills on a .367 hitting percentage. Krystal Cooper moved closer to becoming a member of the Aggies 1,000 kills, 1,000 digs club with 13 kills and 15 digs against the Spartans. It was Cooper’s fifth double-double of the season and the 10th of her career.

Cooper’s 15 digs took her over the 1,000 digs plateau. She now has 1,009 career digs and 915 career kills.

“What we need right now is consistency,’’ said N.C. A&T head volleyball coach Lyndsay Schmiedel. “I thought we played better than we did last night (High Point defeated the Aggies 3-0 Monday night), but it is all about playing this well on a consistent basis.”

After splitting the first two games, the Aggies took over the match in the third game. Leading 19-18 in the third game, a Janae Mitchell kill sparked on an offensive surge for the Aggies. Amber Inman followed with a service ace. Back-to-back Kaycee Anderson kills capped a 5-0 Aggies run that gave them a 24-18 lead.

The Spartans never cut the Aggies lead any lower than four points the rest of the game. Back-to-back kills from Cooper and Nyra Taborn gave the Aggies the win and an edge in the match. The Aggies took that momentum into the fourth game, where they took a 10-2 lead.

The Spartans fought back to tie the game at 12. But a Stacey Malone kill sparked a 5-0 Aggies run that helped them regain control of the game with a 22-16 lead. Brenden Chatman’s kill and an attack error by Norfolk State’s Chantel Cherry helped the Aggies win the game and match.

The Aggies improved to 5-22 overall and 3-2 in the MEAC. Chatman, who became the Aggies all-time assists leader on Monday, added to her total with 43 assists. Malone added 21 digs. The Aggies return to action Saturday when they face S.C. State at Corbett Sports Center at 1 p.m. It will be former Aggies coach Millicent Sylvan’s first return to Corbett since taking over the Bulldogs program.
