ASHEVILLE, N.C., September 23, 2008 – The North Carolina A&T volleyball team is looking forward to taking some time off after what has been a tough non-conference season.

The tough time continued Tuesday night as the Aggies were defeated by UNC Asheville 3-0 (25-16, 9, 14) at the Justice Center. Junior Janae Mitchell led the Aggies with five kills, four digs and two blocks. Senior middle hitter Avignon Williams finished with four blocks.

The Aggies will have a nine-day layoff between matches. After the layoff, the Aggies will face conference foe Norfolk State in Norfolk on Oct. 3 at 7 p.m.

“Right now, I think we’re just searching for confidence,’’ said N.C. A&T head coach Lyndsay Schmiedel. “We have the athleticism to be a good team once the conference starts, but it is nout enough to say it. The ladies must believe they can get it done. Once we become a smarter team on the floor, we can be successful.”

UNC Asheville coach said Julie Torbett said the Bulldogs wanted to run their slide offense effectively to keep the Aggies middle hitters occupied thus giving the Bulldog  outside hitters in one-on-one matchups.

The first set was tied 12-12 before Asheville went on a 5-0 run to lead 17-12. The Dogs used a 7-3 run to gain set point at 24-15. A&T pulled to within eight points before a service error gave Asheville the set.

The Aggies (1-15) held close in the final set at 11-9 before the Dogs went on a 9-2 run to take a 20-12 lead. A kill by Burns gave the Dogs match point at 24-14 and Jenna Dover ended the match with her second kill of the night.
