WILMINGTON, August 29, 2008
– All-conference Avignon Williams looked poised for another good season and freshman setter Jordan Gray looked poised to have a stellar career at North Carolina A&T, but not much else went the Aggies away Friday night as they lost their season opener to Hartford 3-0 (27-25, 25-14, 25-18) in the UNC-Wilmington Volleyball Tournament.

Williams led the way with 10 kills and three blocks, while Gray had 19 assists and 10 digs. Negative hitting percentages in Games 2 and 3 were not to the Aggies benefit, however. Meanwhile, the Hawks had hitting percentages of .258 and .138 in Games 2 and 3 respectively to get the edge over the Aggies.

The Aggies had a chance to win the first game. The Aggies tied the game at 24 on a Jordan Gray kill set up by junior hitter Janae Mitchell. The Aggies then took the lead on a Michelle Cordell error. But the Hawks rattled off the next three points, and won the game on a Williams attack error.

“Right now, we’re just trying to get better,’’ said head coach Lyndsay Schmiedel. “It’s early in the season, so right now it’s about getting better as the season goes on.”

The Aggies will continue play in the UNCW Tournament Saturday when they play Radford at 12:30 p.m.
