Box Score vs. Radford WILMINGTON, August 30, 2008 – The North Carolina A&T volleyball team closed out the 2008 UNC Wilmington Volleyball tournament with losses to Radford and UNC-Wilmington on Saturday. The Highlanders defeated the Aggies 3-0 (25-17, 18, 22) Saturday afternoon, and the Seahawks took down the Aggies 3-0 (25-18, 18, 20) during the night session. Senior Avignon Williams led the Aggies against the Highlanders with seven kills. She followed that performance with a 12-kill, three-block performance against the Seahawks. Sophomore Amber Inman had a career-high 17 digs in the match. “I don’t think we played poorly,’’ said head coach Lyndsay Schmiedel. “Anytime you’re playing with number of young players we are, it takes time for them to get on the same page as some of your veteran players. It takes time to come together in terms of timing, but we’re going to get there.” The Aggies had a rough time during the tournament establishing an offensive rhythm. They had a .072 hitting percentage and had a negative hitting percentage in four of the nine games they played. But the Aggies, led by Williams, did look strong defensively as they blocked 1.8 attacks per game. The Aggies tried to stage a rally in their third game against Radford. Trailing 19-14, the Aggies rattled off four straight points thanks to errors by the Highlanders. The Highlanders rebuilt their lead to five at 24-19 before Janae Mitchell made it close again with a kill and a service ace. Radford’s Meghan McWhorter dashed the Aggies hope of a rally, however, with a kill to end the game. The Aggies also had a chance to rally against UNC Wilmington in the third game of their match. Down 20-14, the Aggies rallied to move to within three at 22-19 on block assists from Williams and sophomore LaShawn White. Williams move the Aggies even closer with a kill but two Aggie errors would prove to be too much for the N.C. A&T (0-3) to overcome. The Aggies return to action, Wednesday, September 3 when they play at UNC Greensboro at 7 p.m. |
