GREENSBORO, September 6, 2008 – North Carolina A&T concluded the 2008 Phoenix Volleyball Classic with losses to Elon and Campbell. The Aggies lost to Elon 3-0 (25-18, 14, 18) during their first match of the day. Later in the day, the Aggies dropped a 3-0 decision (25-23, 13, 15) to Campbell. Junior hitter Janae Mitchell earned all-tournament honors. Mitchell averaged 2.33 kills per game and had a .186 hitting percentage over the three-match classic. She also averaged 2.22 digs during the classic and she had a career match against UNC Wilmington when she put down 11 kills on a .474 hitting percentage. Against Elon, the Mitchell finished with six kills and nine digs. Senior hitter Aundia Gray added six kills and two blocks against the Phoenix. In the matchup against Cambell, senior middle hitter Avignon Williams led the Aggies with five kills and three blocks. Junior LaShawn White had four kills and three blocks, while freshman setter Jordan Gray finished with 17 assists and seven digs. The Aggies had their closest set of the season against the Camels. Trailing 18-16, a Williams kill and back-to-back errors by the Camels gave the Aggies a 19-18 lead. Mitchell helped the Aggies increase that lead with a kill. Two consecutive kills by the Camels tied the game at 20 before a Gray kill recaptured the lead for N.C. A&T. Sarah Hill’s kill tied the game for the Camels again before an attack error moved the Aggies (0-7) closer to winning its first set of the season. Hope Leatigaga barely got a kill past Gray, however, and tied the game at 22. White’s kill put the Aggies two points shy of a set victory, but the Camels ran off three straight points to earn the victory. The Aggies will be back in action at High Point University on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
