Mitchell recorded career highs in three separate categories in a win over UNCA
GREENSBORO, N.C., September 7, 2005 – N.C. A&T outside hitter Arlene Mitchell has spent the last two seasons on the All-MEAC second team despite putting together two outstanding seasons. In 2005, she looks to leave nothing for chance. She is proving her worthiness early by being named MEAC Volleyball Player of the Week. Mitchell (5-9, Jr., Henderson, N.C.) averaged 4.75 kills in 16 games and four matches for the Lady Aggies from Sept 1-Sept. 4. In a win against UNC-Asheville, she had a career day, earning a double-double with 33 kills, 20 digs and eight service aces – all career highs. During the Aggies annual Aggie Volleyball Classic, she averaged an impressive 5.23 kills, 2.92 digs and recorded 11 services aces. For her efforts, Mitchell was named to the Volleyball Classic’s All-Tournament second team. "Arlene is a joy to coach,” said N.C. A&T head coach Millicent Sylvan. “She is always positive and continues to push herself and her teammates to be better. I expect her to be one of the players that brings us through this season successfully." In each of Mitchell’s first two seasons, she ranked among the nation’s leaders in services aces with 63 each of her first two years as an Aggie. In six matches this season, she already has 18 services aces. She has averaged 3.64 kills over her career. After N.C. A&T’s win over Hampton on Tuesday, she is averaging 4.54 kills in 2005. Mitchell and the Aggies (2-4) will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Buies Creek, N.C., to play in the Campbell Invitational. Their opening match is against Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 5:30 p.m.
