Coach Bibbs on the
Aggies strategy in the second half
“We
wanted to stop Coppin’s penetration. What we had to do is lock people
down. We knew our man-to-man wasn’t working that well. It was getting us
into foul trouble, so we went into a zone. We had to keep putting the
pressure on them after made baskets. We know they don’t play a lot of
people, so we wanted to make them play an up-tempo game. We knew playing
a slow down game played to their strength.”
Coach Bibbs on
Taylor-James’ play off the bench as of late
“Brittanie Taylor-James was a starter for us last year. She is starting
to come around with her defense. She is very good at getting to the
line, and then once she gets there she knocks those free throws down.
When she comes off that bench she is a scorer. She provides us with
instant offense. We want her to catch and shoot it. When she gets
rolling she’s tough to deal with.”
Coach Bibbs on Amber
Bland’s scoreless second half
“Well
she passes the ball a lot more than we would like her to do, but that’s
how she plays. She is unselfish. I don’t think it was a matter of her
not looking for her shot, we just had other people step up. When you
have teams trying to stop Amber Bland, you’ve got other people that can
put the ball in the basket like (forward Lamona Smalley), (Ta’Wuana
Cook) and Taylor-James. We are hard to defend because we have people who
can score the basketball.”
Coach Bibbs on the
significance of beating Coppin State
“I
know what it’s like to beat one of the best and make no mistake Coppin
is one of the best. But I wanted the program to experience this, so I’m
just happy for the program. We hit another milestone by beating the
preseason No. 1 team in our conference. They are a very, very good team.
We beat a good team tonight.”
Coach Bibbs on
slowing down two-time MEAC Player of the Year Rashida Suber
“They
like to pass the ball around, penetrate and dish out to her. So we told
our players to make sure you know where she is. They did a good job with
it. We really made her work for her shots tonight. It’s simple. It’s
much tougher to score when you have a defender in your face. When you
leave someone like Suber open, she’s definitely going to knock it down.
She can put the ball on the floor, so you have to be conscience of that.
But she likes to shoot that three and that’s what makes them so
dangerous.”
Coach Bibbs on what
the Aggies can do to improve
“We
have to knock down our free throws. We were 55 percent tonight that’s
normally not going to win games for you on the road.”
Sophomore forward
Lamona Smalley on being undersized
“I
know I have the quickness to get around people even though I’m
undersized. It puts pressure on other teams to find me and block me
out.”
