AGGIES SET TO TAKE ON AUBURN

GAME: Auburn vs. the North Carolina A&T Aggies (Women's Basketball)
Date -- Time:
December 1, 2009 -- 7 p.m.
Place:
Corbett Sports Center
Why is it important?:
The Aggies are trying to pack the house tonight at Corbett Sports Center. Help head coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs and the Aggies against SEC powerhouse Auburn. The more Aggies in the house, the harder it will be for the Auburn Tigers to function.

AGGIE GAME NOTES

WHAT TO LOOK FOR: Tonight will be a matchup of two teams still looking for their identity after losing significant amounts of offense from their respective 2008-09 teams. The Tigers are shooting 41 percent on the season and averaging 66.0 points per game. A year ago, the Tigers shot 47 percent from the field while averaging 76.5 points per game. But the Tigers lost DeWanna Bonner to the WNBA. Meanwhile, the Aggies are averaging 66.0 points per game while shooting 40 percent from the floor. The 2008-09 Aggies shot 44 percent from the floor and averaged 76.5 points per game. But with Amber Bland and Brittanie Taylor-James gone, like the Tigers, the Aggies are using November and December to see what works for them in 2009-10.

HEATING UP: Freshman JaQuayla Berry has scored in double figures in her last two games on 10-for-24 shooting. Berry also earned her first career start against Yale on Saturday because Jaleesa Sams was out with an injury. It’s a definite plus if head coach Patriica Cage-Bibbs has found scorer who comes off the Aggies bench.

NOT THIS TIME: N.C. A&T’s Ta’Wuana “Tweet” Cook and Auburn’s Alli Smalley scored seven and six points respectively in last season’s game at Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum. There is a good chance that will not be the case this season. Both ladies lead their respective teams in scoring. Cook has missed the Aggies last two games with a back injury, but in the Aggies first three games she is 12-for-26 from 3-point range. Smalley has led the Tigers in scoring five times in seven games.

IN THE PAINT: The matchup of N.C. A&T’s Lamona Smalley and Auburn’s Jordan Greenleaf should be a fun one. Both players bring a lot to the table for their respective teams. Smalley is a scorer, rebounder and she is not a bad passer either. Greenleaf can also pass out of the post well and she leads the Tigers in rebounding at 7.0 per game. But while Greenleaf shoots less than 30 percent from the floor, Smalley is off to a red hot start. She is shooting 65.5 percent from the floor, while leading the Aggies in rebounding.

RECORD-BREAKING WATCH: Ta’Wuana Cook needs just three assists tonight to become the Aggies all-time leader. Cook comes into tonight’s game with 330 career assists. The Aggies all-time leader, Shareka Glover, finished her career 332 assists. Cook is a former MEAC Rookie of the Year and a two-time second-team All-MEAC performer.
