GLOVER EARNS FIRST-TEAM HONOR AGAIN

Glover ranked in the top 5 of five different
statistical categories for the second straight season

RALEIGH, March 6, 2005 – When head coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs first took over the women’s basketball program at North Carolina A&T, one of the first names she mentioned was that of senior Shareka “Mia” Glover.

Bibbs, who spent seven seasons at Hampton before retiring after the 2003-2004 season, told the crowd assembled at the press conference that she couldn’t wait to coach a player the caliber of Glover.

Thus far this season Glover (5-4, senior, Landover, Md.) has not disappointed her. Glover, the only four-year senior on this season’s squad, was named first-team All-MEAC Monday night at the annual MEAC Basketball Banquet that ushers in the MEAC Tournament.

Glover earned the honor for the second straight season, becoming the first Lady Aggie to do so since Malveata Johnson did so in 2000 and 2001 (Johnson also was named first team in 1999). Glover becomes only the second Lady Aggie to be named to the MEAC’s first team twice in a career. Angela Hill did it in 1993 and ‘94. Johnson earned the honor three times.

Glover ranks in the top five of five different statistical categories for the second straight season. This season, she leads the conference in free throw shooting (.826); ranks second in scoring (16.3), second in assists (4.65), third in steals (2.73) and third in assists-to-turnover ration (121-to-108). She is the only player in the conference who ranks in the top five of five statistical categories.

“My teammates have been so important to me this year,’’ said Glover. “They have been so supportive this season. Coach Bibbs has really been important to me. She’s taught what it means to be a leader, and the responsibility that comes along with being a leader. I think that is a life lesson I’ll take with me after I leave A&T.”

Glover will also take with her the all-time lead in assists and steals at the University since the NCAA started recording Lady Aggie stats in 1982. On Jan. 22, 2005 she broke the single-game assists record when she recorded 14 helpers against Florida A&M, and on Jan. 23 of this season, she broke the single-game scoring record when she scored 45 points against Morgan State

Going into the MEAC Tournament this week Raleigh she ranks sixth on the Aggies all-time scoring list with 1,289 points. She has scored 30 or more points four times in her career and she has 25-plus points eight times in four years. As a sophomore she was injured and played only 13 games. As a freshman she was named to the conference’s All-Rookie Team.

“Mia Glover is a special player, there is no question about that,'' said Bibbs. "It has been an honor to coach her this year, and I hope we can help her win a championship this year because she has meant so much to this program."
