North Carolina A&T head swimming coach Shawn Hendrix is entering her 13th season with the Aggies. Hendrix has been at the forefront of the swimming program since it became a varsity sport in 1998.

Her emphasis on academics, personal accountability for student-athletes and her amazing ability to build a family atmosphere around the program even after swimmers have graduated as made N.C. A&T's swimming program one of the most exemplary teams on the campus.

She believes college athletics can play a major role in molding student-athletes' lives in terms of developing character, shaping strong values, nurturing life skills and growing life long friendships through competition and community service. The Aggies swimming program is active in the Triad community with such organizations as Habitat for Humanities, Breast Cancer Walk Run and Adopt-A-Street Program.

In addition, Hendrix's athletes have been recognized as the N.C. A&T Athletics Department's Academic Team of the Year (honor is given to the program with the highest team GPA) five out of the last 10 years, including a run where the program won the honor three years in a row.In the pool, the Aggies have established themselves as one of the top HBCU swimming programs in the country. The Aggies have won the HBCU Championship over Howard and Florida A&M the last three seasons.

She also was instrumental in leading the Aggies  into their new conference, the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association. As members of the CCSA, the Aggies will be able to cut down on their travel time and the conference championships will be hosted in places close to North Carolina. Hendrix has steadily improved the program's showing in the CCSA Championships.

Hendrix came to N.C. A&T from the High Point Area Parks and Recreation Department, where, in addition to running a recreation center, she was the head coach of the city's Washington Terrace swimming team for two seasons.

As an undergraduate, Hendrix attended High Point University. She earned her B.S., degree in recreation and physical education in 1994. She recently completed her Master's Degree in sports psychology at N.C. A&T. Hendrix is a native of Columbia, S.C., and is a proud member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
