Carolina A&T has an athletics department that is rich in history with
former athletes who are household names. All 15 intercollegiate varsity
programs compete against the finest competition in the nation in a competitive
and even victorious manner. Over the last decade, the Aggies have captured MEAC
titles in football, baseball, bowling and women's basketball. Also, over the
last decade, the men's outdoor track program has 22 MEAC Champions and seven
All-Americans. The women's outdoor track and field program boast of 12 MEAC
Champions and two All-Americans. The
men's and women's indoor teams have produced one All-American apiece over the
last five years.
Former Aggie
student-athletes have not only gone on to do great things in the sports world,
but they have also been instrumental in business and politics. Former Aggies
quarterback Jesse Jackson, Sr., went on to run for president in 1984 and 1988. Jackson, the head of
Rainbow/Push, was named as one of the NCAA's most influential athletes over the
past 100 years in 2005. Al Attles was a star basketball player at A&T. In
1975, he became just the second African-American coach to win an NBA title when
he led Golden State to the championship. He is the
first and only HBCU graduate to win an NBA title as a head coach. Today, he
works as a vice president in Golden
State's front office.
Hugh Evans, a 1962
graduate of North Carolina A&T, was an NBA draft pick and played in the San
Francisco Giants minor league organization. Evans went on to become an NBA referee
where he consistently rated out as one of the top officials in the league. He
refereed 35 NBA Finals game over distinguished 30-year career. He is currently
an assistant supervisor of officials at the NBA front office. The Aggies even
have a Pro Football Hall of Famer in Elvin Bethea who was inducted in 2003.
The Aggies also
possess some of the finest facilities in black college and mid-major athletics.
Corbett Sports Center,
where the Aggies compete in men's and women's basketball, volleyball and swimming,
was ranked among the best college basketball environments in the nation. Aggie
Stadium is where you can find a state-of-the-art track and video scoreboard. It
is a great place to watch a football.
Aggie football routinely ranks among the top five schools in Division I-FCS
attendance. The Aggies also have an on-campus softball complex, tennis complex
and the baseball stadium is located a few feet from campus.
