GREENSBORO -
Walmart and North Carolina A&T Athletics teams up once again on Tuesday,
October 16 in an effort to raise scholarship dollars for A&T
student-athletes. The Greensboro Walmart on 121 Elmsley Drive will host the
annual Walmart/North Carolina A&T Scholarship Drive in the store's parking
lot starting at 5 p.m.
The highlight of the evening's two-hour event will be
a generous check presentation to Aggie Athletics from Walmart. Among the
distinguished guests are A&T Chancellor, Dr. Harold L. Martin, Sr., and
A&T Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Earl M. Hilton III. All 10
A&T head coaches will be in attendance along with the award-winning Aggie
cheer squad and the nationally-recognized A&T Blue & Gold Marching
Machine.
Door prizes and refreshments will be provided. With
members from the Aggie Athletic Foundation, the fundraising arm of A&T
Athletics, in attendance, along with faculty and staff and students and alumni,
there will be a Blue & Gold explosion at Walmart. The general public,
community supporters and the media are also invited.
But the guests of honor will be A&T's more than
300 student-athletes
"This event is about scholarships for student-athletes," said
Hilton. "It takes about $3.5 million each year to provide scholarships for all
of our student-athletes. We are delighted by the community support these young
men and women have received from Walmart and their vendors. We are so
pleased to receive this generous donation from our local business leaders so
that we can provide access to a college education for students who might not
otherwise have the opportunity."
A&T Athletics and Walmart have an ongoing
five-year relationship. In 2011, Walmart, additionally, assisted the AAF in
conducting an auction at the Koury Convention Center that raised funds for the
department.
Walmart representatives have also attended various
A&T events, including Homecoming, basketball and football
games, All-Sports Awards Banquets, and, most recently, North Carolina A&T's
2012 Commencement , featuring First Lady Michelle Obama as keynote
speaker. Walmart has been instrumental in conducting an annual
pre-Homecoming fundraising event at the Walmart Elmsley Drive location. North
Carolina A&T State University has 15 varsity sports which compete over the
course of the academic school year.
In case of inclement weather, the celebration will be
held in the store's Lawn and Garden Center.
